Dr Francis Rynd was born in Dublin in 1801. In 1844, he invented the hypodermic syringe while treating a woman suffering from extreme facial pain. The innovator made the first recorded injections below the skin, writing about his invention for the Dublin Medical Press.
The current world market for syringes is about $12 billion.
